Summer 2010

Dear First Grader,

I am writing to introduce myself to you as your first grade teacher at Colorado West Christian School. I also want to tell you about some of the things you will be learning in school this year. My name is Mrs. McKishen. Being your teacher is something I'm really looking forward to. You will have a lot of fun in first grade learning new things and getting to know Jesus better.

Learning to read well is an important part of first grade. You and your classmates will be reading many fun and exciting stories. Reading from God's Word will be a very important part of your school day.

To enjoy God's gift of writing, you and your friends will be writing stories about famous American heroes, special animal friends, about flying a kite, or going fishing. You will have the opportunity to share your stories with others. To help you do this you will learn the importance of spelling words correctly.

In arithmetic you will not only learn more about things like numbers, problem solving, counting, and fractions but will also learn about the zoo, the farm, the ocean, and spring time.

I will help you each day to hide God's Word in your heart so you might not sin against Him. As I share exciting stories from the Old and New Testament with you, you will be reminded of how much God loves you.

In social studies you will learn more about our great country, the United States of America, and as we take a pretend trip around the world you will be reminded of how much God loves all the peoples of the world.

You will learn about taking good care of your body, being safe, and being kind and polite to others. You will be using your five senses to investigate God's world. Drawing and painting and making pretty art projects will be a special part of each week. 

We will also be using the "K to the 8th Power" computer curriculum. We'll be doing activities and playing games that reinforce what we're learning in class. Remember to always do your best for Jesus and we'll have a great school year!
