Dear Parents,
We have now had almost a week of school and so we are really getting into our routines and everything
What I would like to do is to tell you a little about what we are doing in the different classes. In Bible we again start with Genesis. We will be going through this pretty fast because it is really familiar to almost all the students. Their first memory verse is Gen. 1:27-28 and is due on Friday, September 3.
In  Math we have started with review. I don’t think there has been much of anything that is new yet, but trust me, we will get to the new concepts. As the weeks go by the students must know their addition and subtraction tables from memory and be able to use them quickly.    One of the things they seem to enjoy the most is oral drill. They will also need to know their measurements. For example, how many inches in a yard, how many hours in a day, and so forth. Soon we will use that knowledge in conversions of measurements. I will soon start sending their “corrections” home for them to do each evening. Hopefully, that will not take them much time.
For Reading we have been using the Bob Jones Reading Books so far but will soon get started with the Foundations and Framework books. The Bob Jones Books give us a good review of phonics and 3rd grade is about the last time they will study any phonics. Also, the stories are short and so they give me a good idea of the ability of each individual to help place them in appropriate (level) books.
Bible, Math and Reading really take up the entire morning. In the afternoon we really have to squeeze to get everything else covered. One of our main subjects is English and right now we are just beginning our work there and working on fragments vs. complete sentences. We also do Spelling in the afternoon but for Spelling they need to study the words during the week at home. It would be good if they went over a few words on a daily basis.
We also try to do some science and history/geography as well as penmanship in the afternoons. When you consider we work these around music, library, computer and PE—well there just isn’t much time for any one subject.
I’m hoping this gives you an idea of what our day is like at school. If possible, join us for part of a day.
God’s Blessings,
Mrs. Nehring
