This year's Bible text is titled The Day of the Lord and is published by Christian Schools International.
It is an Old Testament survey covering the periods from the dividing of the kingdom of Israel into northern and southern parts through the judgments of God, into the time of exile and on into the intertestamental period.
The student textbook is of itself not difficult reading, however, there is a large amount of reading straight from the Scriptures required with each unit. It would be very beneficial for the students if parents would try to read these same passages of Scripture along with us. This would encourage discussion at home and aide in parental help with homework.
Each unit also involves a number of worksheets to be completed. Some are done individually and some as group work. These worksheet will challenge the students to think more deeply then they might be use to doing.
Every unit has a test at the end of the lessons. The tests are partly objective style (matching, true/false, etc.), and partly subjective short answer and essay type questions. They can be fairly challenging.
Each unit also has a Scripture memory component. The memory work is assigned at the beginning of each unit and will be tested near the end of the unit. The student will be asked to write the entire Scripture from memory. They will be graded on exact wording as you would expect, but also on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. This is done so that students give proper respect to God's Word, but also so that they realize that what they learn in English class needs to be applied in areas besides their grammar book.
As an exercise in listening and note taking, students will be asked to take notes on the message in Chapel each Fri. They will then write a short paper on the subject of the message and how it might apply to them in a personal way. This paper will be due the following Mon. at the beginning of Bible class. They will need to use personal pronouns such as me and I not the more generic we or they. I want them to learn to apply the messages of God to their own hearts and conduct not to the other guy's. It also makes them sit up and pay attention better in Chapel.:)
